We understand that due to news reports about drug violence in Mexico that some might have concerns about travelling to Puerto Vallarta. We'd like to share some things with you to put your mind at ease about travel to this wonderful country:
Mexico is BIG!
With a population of over 110 million and a total land mass of over 750,000 square miles, Mexico rates the 13th largest country in the world. Over 900,000 US citizens call Mexico their home (more than any other single country outside the US), and Mexico consistently rates the top retirement destination for US and Canadian citizens.
As with any country, it has it's trouble spots. Tourist destinations like Puerto Vallarta, Cancoun, Cabo San Lucas and others have been virtually free of the violence associated with the Mexican Government's war on drugs. There have been zero incidents involving tourists. The bulk of the violence has been concentrated in border towns, over 1000 miles from Puerto Vallarta. In other areas of the country, there have been rare clashes between rival gangs, or with government troops.
Even the US Government Agrees
The US State Department says, "Millions of U.S. citizens safely visit Mexico each year for study, tourism, and business, including more than 150,000 who cross the border every day. The Mexican government dedicates substantial resources to protect visitors to major tourist destinations, and there is no evidence that organized criminal groups have targeted U.S. visitors or residents based on their nationality. Resort areas and tourist destinations in Mexico generally do not see the levels of drug-related violence and crime that are reported in the border region or in areas along major trafficking routes."
